AMLA 29th Regular Convention

AMLA 29th Regular Convention

Every 4 years, the American Mutual Life Association, which is a fraternal benefit society, gathers delegates from every AMLA Lodge to hold a Convention. The Convention is the governing entity of the AMLA, and is unique opportunity for Members to have a say in the governance of the AMLA.

November, 2018, the AMLA will have its 29th Convention and will hold it at The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio. The Convention begins in the morning of Saturday, November 3, 2018, and continues until the business of the Convention is concluded Sunday, November 4, 2018.

Each AMLA Lodge is tasked to elect delegates as prescribed by the Bylaws of the AMLA. These delegates act on behalf of the members of their Lodge to represent the interests of the AMLA and the Membership. These duties include understanding the operations of the Association, discussing, debating, and voting for bylaw changes, and voting for Board Directors to represent the Membership for the next four years.

Bylaw Additions/Changes:

Lodges will discuss Bylaw changes that they would like considered at the Convention. In March of this year, the Lodges received forms on which they will describe their proposed Bylaw changes. These forms should be completed and submitted ahead of the deadline stated on the form.

The Bylaws are a list of procedures and policies used as the basis of the governance of the AMLA. The modification of such can only happen at the Convention. Delegates discuss and vote to approve, enact, or modify Bylaws at the Convention, which is part of the representative form of government essential to fraternal organizations like the AMLA.

Choosing Delegates:

For each Convention, Lodges must send a group of Delegates to represent their Lodge Members at the Convention. Lodges should dedicate a portion of their meetings to discussion of who should comprise their delegation. While each delegate must be voted on by Members of the Lodge, there is not preclusion from discussing which delegates will be voted on and why.

Lodges will be required to notify their Lodge Members of the date and time of the meeting at which these Delegates will be voted on. Each Delegate must meet the minimum requirements, which include attending at least 4 meetings in the calendar year prior to Convention, and be a Member of the Lodge for at least one year.
